New learning area reports now live

For more than 30 years, our study teams have worked alongside ākonga, kaiako, kura, and education communities across Aotearoa to build a picture of teaching and learning across the New Zealand education system. In 2023, alongside the refresh of the New Zealand Curriculum, the Curriculum Insights and Progress Study began, building on this long-standing programme of national educational monitoring and research.

Four collections of Curriculum Insights and Progress Study learning area reports are now live and freely available on our website.

The reports draw on data collected in 2023 across te ao tangata | social sciences and English, and in 2024 across mathematics and statistics, and science.

Together, these reports provide insights into student achievement, teaching and learning experiences, and the wider contexts shaping education in Aotearoa New Zealand. The findings are grounded in real experiences and informed by the voices of those working and learning within our education system every day.

Our reports have been developed as practical and useful resources to support reflection, spark professional kōrero, and inform planning and decision-making across a range of settings. Whether you are a kaiako in the classroom, a school leader, involved in policy or research, or simply interested in education in Aotearoa, we hope there is something here that resonates with your work and experience.

Included in this release are our flagship Insights for Teachers reports. These reports have been designed to share findings in ways that feel practical, relevant, and grounded in classroom realities. Alongside key findings, they include prompts, examples, and ideas intended to support reflection on teaching and learning practice.

Importantly, the insights shared within these reports form part of an ongoing body of work. Education continues to evolve, shaped by curriculum change, system priorities, and the experiences of learners and educators themselves. The Curriculum Insights and Progress Study will continue building this national picture over time.
